Privacy

I collect as little as I can, keep it only as long as I need it, and never sell or share it. This page says exactly what that means.

In effect from October 15, 2026. Changes are dated here and listed on the changes page.

No ads, no trackers, no analytics cookies, no third-party scripts watching you read. Reading the fixes on this site collects nothing about you.

When you just read the site

Nothing is stored about you by me. The site is served through Cloudflare, which handles the connection and blocks abusive traffic. Cloudflare sees your IP address and basic request details the way any web host does, and may keep short-lived technical logs. I only see totals, like how many visits a page got. There is no tracking script on any page; those counts come from Cloudflare's own connection logs, not from anything running in your browser. See Cloudflare's privacy policy for how they handle that.

When you press "Did this help?"

The only thing sent is which article you were on and whether you pressed Yes or No. No name, no IP address, no cookie. Your own browser remembers that you've voted so you don't see the buttons again; that memory never leaves your device.

When you ask me for help

The help form asks for:

That's all. Please don't put passwords, account numbers, or anything you'd be unhappy for me to see in the message box. I don't need them, and if one turns up I'll delete it and tell you.

Where it goes and who sees it

Your message is stored in a private database on Cloudflare that only I can open, behind a private sign-in that only I have. It doesn't go to any email list, help desk product, or outside service. I read it myself and reply to you directly from nick@asknickjohnson.com or by phone, whichever you asked for.

I don't share it with anyone. The only exception would be if the law required me to, which I'd expect to never happen for a message about a printer.

How long I keep it

Thirty days after your problem is resolved, or after I last hear from you, I delete your request. The database also deletes it automatically 60 days after you sent it, as a backstop in case I forget.

If you'd like it gone sooner, email me and I'll delete it the same day and confirm back to you.

During a session

If I need to see your screen, it's only with your okay, only while we work, and you can stop at any time. I never record the session, never take screenshots of your screen, and never ask for or write down your passwords.

Screenshots in articles

Screenshots in the fixes come from my own devices or test accounts. I don't publish anything from a session with you.

Email

If you email me, your message sits in my mailbox like anyone's. I keep the thread until the problem is sorted and delete it on the same 30-day schedule.
